We took down the pictures nick nacks and covered the furniture to protect them from all the dust as we brushed the ceiling and walls ...

and swept the floor.

Towel dispensers were added in all the bathrooms.

Some handmade shelves were added as well.

Furnishing Effort Begins

This has been a busy week. It started last Saturday checking out the some of the lights we are thinking about using on the exterior of the lodge. Everyone agreed the samples looked good so Mary and I picked up the rest on Tuesday and they'll be out at camp this weekend for the electrician.

We also purchased the fans for the Great Room.

On Tuesday I went down to the lodge to measure the bedrooms with the help of Ed Allen. The beds we are ordering form Rocky Top are a log construction and we were unsure how well they would fit in the bedrooms considering the spacing between the doors and windows. So we stopped and got some chalk, the glow in the dark kind, and measured out all of the bed placements. After considering the options we elected to order 9 bunks per youth room and 2 per adult room. The order went out on Thursday and they should be starting the beds next week.

All of that was followed by a conference call with the committee on Thursday to finalize the flooring in the Great Room, which after a lot of consideration will stay wood as in the original plans. Some additional news was that Carol found some barn wood at a place near Apple Canyon and Buddy started making some of the interior trim with it.

Tomorrow I'll be done at the lodge to deliver the lights and fans and Dave is bringing more of the tile for the kitchen area.

The front sidewalk is in place and the ramp from the front too what will be the driveway off to the left of the picture.

The dry wall is hung in the training room. Here you can see the pocket in the ceiling for the screen in front of the display shelf. This is the wall between the training room and the kitchen.

Today looks like one of those days when a lot of things that were prepared all came together. Below is the fireplace with the mantel. Looks pretty sharp.

The sidewalk that runs from the front around to the west side of the building got poured. You can see the air conditioning units are also in place on the west side.

I ran down to camp Saturday after a meeting I had in Rockford and got some more pictures of the Boeger Leadership Lodge. The stone on the fireplace is in place, some of the landscaping has been completed, and the forms for the sidewalk running around the west side of the building were put in place.

Dave and I were out with Ed Allen and Dan Banko to watch the cement dry. We brought back a clip for Bill who wasn't able to make it.

What we were actually doing was moving the trees that were downed last fall but still in the area. Fortunately for us the NYLT staff had some time and came out to help with the loading.

This morning Steve James and I visited the site. The concrete workers were putting the finishing touches on the foundations walls. Rumor has it that the forms will be filled with concrete on Tuesday starting at 6am. Hopefully tomorrows pictures will show the ready-mix trucks

Chris Steiner, Scoutmaster Troop 166 and the Project Manager for this lodge and I visited the site on Saturday. The footings were poured and the foundation forms were readied to be assembled.

Another day at the construction site;

Well we have made progress in the last couple of days

But, (but there always has to be a but) The temperature is too warm and the highway commissioner will not let us drive ready-mix trucks on the roads.

Based on the weather reports, maybe Friday or Saturday. So as crazy as it sounds think 20 degrees

Curriculum Teams Ready the Program!

As we await construction on the Lodge, the curriculum teams responsible for writing the modules are in full swing! Ten teams are currently writing the modules to be used for the Boeger Leadership Center, focusing on developing leadership skills in middle school youth. Preliminary drafts are due Feb. 8th (the 99th Anniversary of Boy Scouting). The editorial team will then look at proposed format and activities and make suggestions to each team. Our goal is to pilot each module this spring prior to the opening of the Boeger Leadership Center.

Challenges Met and Overcome

As noted in the prior post, a major challenge was recently addressed under the leadership of Dave Savone. Let me explain what slowed us down.

This project is funded by and coordinated by volunteers, although we have retained and hired experts to perform the construction and site work. Our challenge developed in the gap between our experts. Our building plans were ready in the Fall and the hole was scheduled to be dug, until late word came from the Ogle County that the plans must be subjected to an unexpected level of scrutiny by the State of Illinois in Springfield. This requirement for a special review resulted from good laws designed to provide high levels of protection for youth staying overnight at a youth camp, but the timing was bad for us.

Details, details, details. Our plans didn't have enough details until Dave made countless telephone calls and visits with experts to accelerate the development of interior and operational plans to prove that the Boy Scouts know what we do about running a youth camp facility! Certainly we passed, it just took longer than expected.

We have pages and pages of plans now, and current building plans will be added here soon.

Now we are ready to go! Keep an watching this blog for updates on when we will break ground!

Efforts Continue - Permits Obtained

We haven't posted in a while as our leader Dave Savone, Captain Dave, in addition to protecting the citizens and property of Hoffman Estates has become an accomplished gymnast after jumping through all of the hoops the state put in front of him. What kind of hoops? How many of you knew that to get a commercial kitchen approved for "construction" you have to provide a menu? However we now have the necessary permits to begin construction. As soon as the weather permits we hope to get this underway and be able to provide more frequent updates.

My son Jason and I were out at Lowden on Wednesday to cut and move more of the trees that were aleady downed.

The septic tanks have been installed and will be covered after the excavation is done.

UPDATE: Permit issues are causing headaches and the usual delays, but will certainly not stop the project. We expect to be digging this week or next week. Stay tuned.

Clearing The Area Continues

Most of the larger trees were cleared from the construction area on November 8th. Help is still needed to finish cutting up the trees that were taken down.

Well, another work day on the lodge.

Today, Donn Vitek, Steve James and myself continued to clear trees and brush from the site. Also, Don Reis worked on the ceiling in the Wienke building. Please thank these friends of ours for the help on this and other projects.

I had meeting with Melanie (from Dixon) the kitchen designer, to fine tune some things. Mickey Tate the septic contractor removed some stumps, delivered stone and took delivery on the peet tanks. He should have the septic done in the next couple of weeks. I also met with Joe Tracey, our general contractor, He completed the lose ends and is securing the Bradley Kiosk to concrete today. He will also cleanup the mess he made, (oh is that a better thing). He laid out the location of the building for excavating.

On the way home the was a small opportunity with the permit so Thursday: Joe, Duane and Phil McCreary are working on that. Hopefully it will be worked out and they will move the machines over there late in the day to start digging Friday morning.

The Committee at Work

Selecting the best location for the Boeger Leadership Center was an arduous task. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Many locations were considered before Camp Lowden was chosen. Then, without rest for the weary, the process of selecting the location within camp required multiple visits and consultations. It was worthwhile; the resulting location is perfect.

Lodge Doorway for Leaders

When Jim Boeger made this leadership center possible, he explained that he had observed a lodge at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico with a program that inspired young people to become great leaders. From his description of the lodge at Philmont, the doorway of the Boeger Leadership Center lodge has been designed with a message for all who pass through the doorway.

We hope the message becomes clear to participants in the training programs.

The Boeger Leadership Training Center Committee has endeavored to build an excellent facility for the Scouts, Scouters, school children, teachers and community volunteers who will call this lodge home for a few days. The look is constantly evolving, but the goal is clear: Perfect for the intended purpose with comfortable elegance and a Western Philmont Scout Ranch feel.

Building Plans Approved By Committee

After a lot of thought and with unequalled dedication to bringing this project in on-time, on-budget, and on-mission, the Boeger Leadership Center committee settled on a set of plans which are now under construction.

Friends,

Dave Savone has accomplished so much with his spirited dedication to the successful construction of the Boeger Leadership Center that I thought we ought to start recording what has been accomplished before we forget the details.

My apologies that this blog will look and sound rough. If I waited until I could make this look professional, well--it would never get done. I thought I would just get started and see what happens as this blog grows and develops.

In keeping with my belief that Scouting accomplishes the most when everyone has a say in the outcome, I have set this up so that anyone who visits the site can comment on it. Probably only our little team will be looking at it for now, but we'll see what happens. If it gets out of hand---I would be surprised. Probably pleasantly surprised.

(By the way, am not a blogger, but this seemed like a good way to share our progress and learn something new. Your suggestions are welcome and encouraged.)

Enjoy, and thanks for all you are doing to make Scouting better for the kids.
